Kitty: Sea-Calming Immortal

The Sea-Calming Immortal is no immortal at all, but a cat. Its usual spot is atop the Sea-Calming Pillar, the tallest on the docks.

Before any Weiyang City ship sets sail, its crew comes to bow to this cat and offer it three little dried fish, hoping the Immortal will keep them safe from storms and big fish at sea.

The Sea-Calming Immortal sits up there perfectly upright, tail hanging down, looking for all the world like a real divine beast.

But only the Immortal itself knows it has no magic powers at all, and it's certainly no immortal cat. It's a... stray!

The first time it climbed the pillar, it was fleeing a dog with nowhere left to run. A rich family's hunting hound was hot on its heels, and in a panic it leapt upward, scrambling all the way to the top of the Sea-Calming Pillar.

Strangely enough, that very day a merchant ship ran into a storm at sea, yet came home safe. The sailors said it was most likely because they had offered dried fish to the immortal cat on the Sea-Calming Pillar before setting out, and so had been blessed.

And so the name of the Sea-Calming Immortal spread.

The Immortal thought: foolish humans, it's obviously the pillar that has the magic. Otherwise why would nobody recognize it the moment it came down from that pillar? It would have to go back to that old life of being chased by dogs and shooed away by people.

So it has no plans to come down. As long as it can keep sitting on this pillar, it is a divine cat: people offer it fish, people wave to it, people call it Immortal.

So what is it that people are worshipping: the cat on the pillar, or the pillar?
