Kitty: Rice Cake

Rice Cake is an old cat now, its whiskers so white they look dipped in powdered sugar, which, along with its name, makes it all the more delicious.

Every day it lies on the deity statue at Fortune Haven, resting with its eyes closed, neither gladdened by things nor saddened by itself. In its world there is no hatred, no fame or gain, no clinging to self, no troubles and no sorrows, only the same plain calm as ever.

The faithful all say Rice Cake is a born Zen practitioner. They lay little dried fish around the sleeping Rice Cake, gather round it and devoutly make their wishes, murmuring: "Our Buddha Rice Cake, our Buddha Rice Cake."

In its dreams, Rice Cake gives its tail a flick. It thinks: the happiness these people search so hard for has been right beside them all along. It's something as simple as napping in the sun, so why don't people know it?
